How to Take Care of Your Pool in Extreme Heat
Tips from Done Better Pools to Keep Your Water Safe, Clear, and Swimmable All Summer Long
When the summer sun is blazing, your pool needs a little extra TLC. High temperatures and prolonged sun exposure can lead to faster chlorine breakdown, surprise algae blooms, and wild swings in your water chemistry. But with the right routine, you can stay ahead of the heat and keep your pool crystal clear.
Here’s what we recommend at Done Better Pools when the temps start climbing:
1. Test Your Water More Often (2–3 Times a Week)
Normally, testing your water once a week is enough. But when it’s really hot out, things change fast, especially your chlorine levels. Heat and sunlight both cause chlorine to dissipate more quickly, which leaves your pool vulnerable to algae and bacteria.
During heat waves, test your water two to three times a week. That way, you’ll catch imbalances early, before they turn into bigger problems.
2. Shock Weekly to Keep Chlorine Working
Weekly shock treatments are essential when it’s hot out. Shocking helps keep your chlorine active and effective, even when temperatures soar. It also helps fight off organic contaminants that build up faster in warm water.
If your free chlorine is already in a good range, try using a non-chlorine shock (oxidizer) instead. It breaks down used-up chlorine and refreshes your sanitizer without raising your chlorine levels too high.
3. Keep an Eye on Your CYA Levels
Cyanuric Acid (CYA) acts like sunscreen for your chlorine, it helps protect it from burning off in direct sunlight. Ideally, your CYA should be in the 30–50 ppm range.
For saltwater pools, a slightly higher range (60–80 ppm) is often more effective in hot climates. This helps your salt cell generator work more efficiently and reduces wear and tear.
4. Run Your Pump Longer
Water circulation is key to a clean, algae-free pool. When water is moving, it’s harder for algae to stick to surfaces and grow. If you normally run your pump 8 hours a day, consider bumping it up to 10 during heat waves.
If temps are soaring above 100°F, run your pump even more. And if you have a variable-speed pump, try running it on low speed 24/7 to maximize filtration and efficiency during extreme heat.
Beat the Heat with Better Pool Care
Keeping your pool clean and balanced during hot weather doesn’t have to be a hassle. With more frequent testing, proper shocking, and smart circulation, you’ll keep your water clear and safe, no matter how hot it gets.
